Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Mounting Round Trailer Axles

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be having a look at the CE Smith line of U-bolt mounting kits for mounting round trailer axles. Here's what our kit comes with. It's everything you need for replacing the U-bolts on a single axle on your trailer. We have 4 new U-bolts, you'll have 2 per side; 2 new plates, 1 per side; 8 new lock washers, you'll be using 4 for each side of the trailer; and 8 new nuts, again 4 for each side of the trailer. You can see how well our U-bolts grip around the contours of our axle. This'll keep the axle firmly attached to our leaf springs, so we don't have to worry about it slipping and sliding. Now because we have the zinc and the galvanized finish on our plate and our hardware, this will better protect them from corrosion from the elements, especially salt spray. It's not an issue if you decide to use them on a boat trailer such as this one.Now many of our customers have had to make a second phone call or send an email to us after they bought a new axle for their trailer because they found, once they tried to remove the old one or put the new one on, that they couldn't get their factory U-bolts off.

They had to cut them off, and now they're searching for a replacement. This kit will be a perfect solution for this problem here. Now many of our customers compared these to the Redline line of U-bolt kits. Now the main difference you're going to see between this one and those is that those do not have the galvanized or the zinc finish on the plates or the hardware, which will cause them to rust out faster. As you can see, we already have our new axle sitting on top of our leaf springs. Now this kit could work for an axle that sits on top or below your leaf springs. It works for both applications.

You don't need to worry if yours resides below, you can still use this kit for that. We'll start by taking our new U-bolts and dropping them over our axle on either side of our leaf spring. Now we'll take our new plate. We want to make sure that this flange right here faces down, this hole here in the center lines up with the alignment pin on our leaf spring, and we'll insert our U-bolts through the holes. Place on our lock washers, and we'll put that on our nuts. Now we can start to tighten our hardware, making sure we tighten them evenly as possible. Now we'll torque our hardware again, making sure we alternate to ensure that we're doing it as evenly as possible. And that completes our look at the CE Smith line of U-bolt kits for mounting round trailer axles..

  • Converting 3,500 lb Torsion Axle to Spring Leaf Axle on Boat Trailer
Hey Sam; thanks for the question and yes it is possible to go from a 3,500 lb torsion axle to a spring leaf axle on your boat trailer. You'll need to have new hangers welded on, as well as get leaf springs and, of course, the axle itself. For the hanger kit you can go with the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs - 3-1/4" Front, 1-1/4" Rear # APS4 which gives you 5 inches of distance between the center of the axle and the trailer frame. For 3,500 lb leaf springs you can...

  • Do You Carry Add a Leaf for Trailer Leaf Springs?
Hello Ed, I am sorry but we do not have add a leaf for trailers. I recommend that you get new leaf springs. If you could please let me know what your axle capacity is, and the eye to eye measurement on your leaf spring while unloaded, I am happy to find the right leaf spring for you. Your measurement will most likely be longer than what you actually need as they do flatten over time. For example: if your axle is 3,500 pounds, and you get a measurement around 26", you will need the 4-Leaf...

  • Can I Use 4,000 lbs Springs to Replace 3,500 lbs Leaf Springs?
Hey Jason, welcome back! The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e57SR is the same length so it would definitely work. Bumping up an extra 500 lbs per spring is definitely going to help with the longevity of your suspension. That increase in capacity along with you dropping down a leaf won't make your suspension stiff. The Dexter item # DX35CR would be a better replacement option though. Dexter's leaf springs are a higher quality and will last longer. Please note...

  • Info Needed to Pick Out Replacement Suspension for Boat Trailer
Hey Noah, could I get you to get me the length of your current leaf springs but more importantly the axle capacity of the trailer? With that we can determine what parts you'd need. Worth mentioning is that if you are exceeding the weight capacity of the trailer there's really nothing that can be done that can increase it's capacity. The overall capacity is based on several factors like suspension, axle capacity, frame capacity, brakes, coupler capacity, frame design etc.

  • Parts Needed To Rebuild Suspension On 1968 SilverStreak Dual Axle Trailer
Hello Ken, thanks for reaching out. We do carry some 26" long double eye leaf springs. For example, the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e22YR is a 1-3/4" wide 2,000 lb spring that may work for you. As far as the other suspension parts, I will need more info to make sure you get the right parts. If you want to replace all the bolts and shackles I would need to know the length of the current shackles measured center hole to center hole. Same for the equalizer. I would need the hole to hole measurements...

  • What Suspension Components Typically Get Replaced with Leaf Springs on Trailer Suspension
Great question William, basically it just comes down to the condition of everything. You can sometimes get away with just replacing the springs but you'd want to check out all of the moving components and see what is good and what isn't. It could be you just need new spring bolts but you also might need shackles as well. If you are out there measuring the spring with a load off of it just go over all of the components and it'll be pretty obvious.

  • Can You Swap From 2,200lb Axles To 3,500lb Axles On A Jayco Jay Feather X23B
Hey Mike, The answer is typically cost whenever you look back and think why did the manufacturer do this? Jayco probably got a deal to use those axles/hubs and went with it. You can swap out the axles for something heavier duty, but the capacity of the trailer will remain the same since the lowest rated component would now be the frame. To swap over you'll first need to measure the hub face and spring center of the axle to match up. Next you'll need to replace the leaf springs and U-bolts...

  • What Leaf Spring do I Need for My Dexter Axle with Weight Rating 4,400 Pounds?
Hello Doug, Great question, and I am happy to make sure we get you into the right leaf spring. Since there is not a real standard for putting trailers together I am going to need a measurement from you. I need you to measure the Leaf Spring as unloaded as possible from eye to eye (please see attached image). Once I get that measurement from you I can recommend the right spring. For example, if your measurement is close to 25 1/4" then you will need the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,400-lb...

Hello Brett, I am sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time finding this leaf spring. We do not have anything that is rated that low in a 2" wide. In fact we only have 2 different leaf springs in 2" wide and neither are even a double eye. Your best bet is going to be to swap out your hangers to a 1 3/4" like the Single-Axle Trailer Hangers for Double-Eye Springs - 1-1/2" Front, 7/8" Rear # DX44CR, then you would be able to use the # DX83CR. Hello Scott, We will definitely have some leaf springs that will work for you, but I do not have a database that supplies me with what is put on what camper (would be pretty sweet if such a list existed), so you will need to double check my research. I am showing that you should have a tandem axle set-up with each axle rated at 3,500 pounds. You will need to measure the leaf spring with unloaded weight, it is usually best to jack the camper up to get the weight off completely. Your measurement...

  • Looking For Replacement Leaf Springs For Single Axle Trailer
Hello Richard, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the replacement leaf springs must be the same size as the current springs. There is a small amount of wiggle room like 1/2" or so with the single axle suspension, but we want to get the spring size as close as we can. The best practice is to jack up one side of the trailer so you can measure the springs unloaded. Aside from the unloaded spring measurement, I will also need to know the weight capacity of your axle. This way we can be sure the...

Since I do not have a database that supplies me with what is put on what trailer, you will need to check the measurements on the parts you are replacing. - Leaf springs: should be 25 1/4", you want to measure with the weight unloaded (sometimes best to jack it up to get the weight off), they do stretch over time so you might get a longer measurement like 26". If you have a 2k axle that uses hubs like the # 34822545BX you were looking at then you would need the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit # CE23000. This fits your standard 2k axle with a 1-3/4" diameter. Since we know the weight class with your axles the next step would be to measure from eyelet to eyelet to figure out the correct length. With the leaf spring being flat it's going to measure a bit longer than it typically would so we would just need to find something close to the measurement. At 4,000lbs we have a...

This measurement is taken with the leaf spring relaxed from center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole. With them holding the weight of the trailer they will begin to flatten out and get longer. We do also have them with a Dacromet Coating # e68SR which will withstand corrosion better than painted steel units. The CE Smith U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 includes new u-bolts, washers, nuts and...
